How do you spend your time? Wisely or not?
Do you often run out of day before you run out of tasks?
Is there any truth to the idea of time freedom?
We can all agree that we all have the same 24 hours every day. Most of us can choose how we spend that time working around the non-negotiables of life. Those might be a job, getting sleep, cooking food, running a business, etc.
If you’ve ever felt like you’re on a hamster wheel, or stuck in the movie “Groundhog Day,” then using these time management techniques to supercharge your day can be just what the doctor ordered! Try these 5 Time Management Hacks and notice a difference in how you feel about time. And for more help, see A Time Management Planner for Home Business Success.
Time Management Hack #1 – Look After Yourself
There are three main components of self-care to work into every day. If you leave even one of them out for more than a few days, you will start to feel sluggish, that is a bit like a slug. Here are some non-complicated ways you can incorporate these into your day.
- Sleep – 7-8 hours of sleep per night is a minimum. Sleep studies show our sleep cycles average 90 minutes each. When planning your night’s rest, keep that in mind. It’s best when we can wake up naturally as opposed to in the middle of the dream cycle. You know how being jolted out of a dream can be distressing at times. - Exercise – Daily is best. I’m not talking 60+ minute calorie burning experiences, but something to get your body moving each day. Always check with your doctor before beginning a workout routine. There are plenty of good exercise apps and online coaches these days if you aren’t able to get to the gym.
- Healthy Eating – Getting a good variety of fruits and vegetables, protein, and carbs. Again, working with a dietician or your family physician to understand how your body works is a better option than yo-yo dieting (losing and gaining) or following fad diets that aren’t necessarily giving your body what it needs.
Time Management Hack #2 – Effective Planning
Get good at prioritizing. You’re not effective if you accomplish 15 tasks, but neglect the most important ones. Identify and prioritize what is most important. You can have a sense of freedom when you know exactly what tasks are essential each day.
While there is definitely room for being spontaneous, having an agenda for your day can take the guesswork out of what you should be doing. This is especially helpful when you are trying to start a new habit and add something from your bucket list into your day. Perhaps you’ve been trying to clean out that hall closet that is about to burst at the seams. Fitting in the “extra” things often requires planning.
This can also include goal setting. Most coaches I know recommend you revisit your goals daily to keep them front of mind. With effective planning, you will write down your goals so they are available to review. There are apps you can use to keep your planning organized. If you ever wonder where your time is going, using this hack will be helpful.
Time Management Hack #3 – Eliminate Distractions
Life is full of distractions. Running after children or grandchildren and having the television blaring are just a few. You know what it is for you.
When you are trying to get something done for your business, it is best to find a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted. Make sure those people who live with you understand your need for this time to focus. Be sure you stay focused on only one thing at a time. Clean up any clutter in your space that might take your focus off the task at hand.
Time Management Hack #4 – Analyze Time Wasters
The first step to eliminating time wasters is to identify what they are. Is scrolling on social media, watching one YouTube after another, playing video games, etc. If you want to scare yourself a little, keep track of how much time you “waste” each day, add it up and multiple it by 365 (that’s your yearly number)!
Many times, we let ourselves waster precious time to avoid something we don’t want to do. We can often find all sorts of tasks to keep us from doing what we are dreading. The best way to stop avoiding something is to delegate it. Find someone who LOVES doing it, and then teach them how to do it for you.
Talk about transforming your day! Imagine how it would feel to not have to cook your meals, clean the house, post on social media, edit videos, etc.
Time Management Hack #5 – Be Efficient
You know when you are most productive. For some people that’s early in the morning when everything is still quiet. For us night owls, it’s after the sun goes down, before the sun comes up again!
You’ll get more done and be efficient when you schedule your tasks accordingly. Don’t plan to record videos if you’re going to be yawning. Don’t try to crunch numbers if you’ve been working a long day already.
Be sure you set deadlines to give yourself some accountability. Batch tasks together that are similar or that can be accomplished with some of the same activities. The caution here is to watch out for perfectionism. Don’t stop having fun when you’re too busy at optimizing every moment for efficiency’s sake.
