Are you wondering, “where do I begin?” when it comes to how to market on social media?
If you’re a “newbie,” just getting started with your home business, you’ve joined a great club of folks dedicated to serving other home business owners. Being a newbie doesn’t last for long. As soon as you learn something you can apply, and apply it, you’ve got experience!
You’re also a newbie (for purposes of this post) if you have been a home business owner for some time but are just now beginning to market on social media. You need to learn how to market on social media. Online marketing with social media is different than face-to-face marketing offline.
We all are hungry for the latest tips on social media marketing. Here’s a bonus tip — NEVER refer to yourself as a newbie. We learned this early on. It doesn’t serve you well. Instead, focus on learning and sharing, learning and sharing, rinse and repeat. Remember, you are always a step ahead of someone else once you start learning and applying.
Here are a few critical tips on social media marketing we can share with you. These tips are critical, although – I realize – to some they will seem obvious.
Be Fearless – Learn and Experiment
Many people fear the unknown, and if you’ve not been on a social media platform like Facebook or Twitter before, it can be intimidating at first. You may hear stories from other marketers about how to market on social media. They may even tell you it’s not effective. It’s more likely those marketers were not effective because they weren’t using social media in the right way. You won’t necessarily know what’s right or wrong until you learn and experiment.
There is a lot of good training available for learning how to market on social media. Find some authorities in your niche that are having success. What are they doing? If you follow their lead and listen to their tips on social media marketing, you will likely learn solutions that will work for you and your business.
Remember the “rinse and repeat?” When you are fearless, you experiment and use what you are learning. Try out some things. The more you step outside your comfort zone and experiment, the sooner you’ll develop expertise. The important thing is – don’t just stand there – use what you are learning.
Will you make mistakes? Yes. We have made plenty. All marketers make mistakes, it’s how we learn. Be more afraid of not failing than failure itself. The more you experiment on social media, the faster you’ll discover something that works for you. You will not always win the battle, and that is a thing you need to know and accept because it’s true for everyone.

Be Flexible – Expect & Embrace New Stuff
When you first get started learning how to market on social media, everything will be new. Social media is not static, it is ever changing. Even seasoned marketers are needing to be flexible, ready to embrace the new stuff.
You will soon see there are new techniques and strategies being discovered every day. Every day, it seems, there are new articles promising you the latest and greatest in social media techniques. Don’t ever get stuck in a rut and miss out on changes that could benefit your business. Keep your eyes open for those new tweaks, test them out, and – if they work for you – embrace them.
Social media rules are not hard to follow or learn. Reading newsletters and articles, attending webinars, and being part of a community can help you to keep abreast of changes. Stay flexible because, with all the new stuff coming out, it’s not easy to keep up. It may seem like a new ‘amazing strategy’ is released every few minutes.

The different kinds of opportunities on social media available are endless. You have Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Pinterest, to name a few. We teach our team to pick one social media platform at first and get good at it. This doesn’t mean you have to stay with that one alone. In fact, you may want to try a few, because it’s never wise to put all your eggs in one basket.
For instance, if Facebook decided to shut its doors tomorrow, and that’s the only social media platform you were using, your business would take a huge blow. It wouldn’t matter how flexible you were to change. So, you will be served well in your business if you are flexible to changes within one platform and – over time – also learn several others.
Be Friendly – Express Yourself: Social Media Means Be Social
If you have ever networked with others in business, then learning how to market on social media will be somewhat familiar. It won’t be face to face, it’s profile to profile … and yet, you are still interacting with real people. You can’t just set up your profiles, ask a few people to be your friend/follower, and then never do anything else, expecting raging success from these portals. You need to be friendly and devote some time to it, more than a few times per week.
While you don’t want to spend all your time on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or whatever the newest and most popular portal is, you also don’t want to let your profiles languish untouched. The rule of thumb here is to be social. Don’t let your ego make you stop the communications process. This is an epidemic that’s rampant online today.
Remember your mission. You are there to serve others and to find solutions. You are not going to do either if you are too busy in your own little world and not spending time getting to know your audience. That’s why so many marketers fail.
You must be a friend first. Make the necessary effort to respond to people so they know you care. You don’t have to make the reply lengthy or complicated, and it can be as simple as a ‘thanks for commenting, I really appreciate it!’ but it must be done. People don’t like to be ignored and when you don’t respond, this is how your followers will feel.
These are just a few quick tips on social media marketing. With hard work and dedication, you can learn how to market on social media. Decide on the right platform for you and get to work.
